Class A CDL – Heavy Haul/Girder Truck Driver

Privately owned and operated since 1974, V Van Dyke are specialists in oversized hauling in the Puget Sound area. We are looking to hire a Class A licensed Heavy Haul Truck Driver. In this Full-time position, you will safely drive within guidelines to ensure customer needs are met within the agreed upon timelines.

This position is responsible for operating, driving and maintaining various heavy haul configurations including up to 260,000 GVW, height to 18’, width up to 20’ safely and within guidelines to ensure customer needs are met within the agreed upon timelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate various heavy hauling configurations (up to 260,000 GVW, height to 18’, width up to 20’) under a wide variety of conditions including off road
  • Manage brake usage to prevent failure during operation and know best evasive options in the event of loss
  • Operate hydraulic, jeeps and steering equipment, and mechanical or hydraulic trailers
  • Operate and move over dimensional loads
  • Ability to pull stretch flatbed and up to 100’ loads
  • Ability to learn to haul girders up to 200’ long.
  • Verify, tarp, and balance loads on trailers
  • Understand impact of loads on axle weights and variable kingpin positions, as well as pressures on boosters and drop axles.
  • Know requirements and how to: flag loads, communicate with pilot/escort vehicles, and use oversize load signs
  • Perform pre-trip inspections, monitor and maintain vehicle and load
  • Complete basic maintenance of trucks

Qualifications

  • Three to five years related experience and/or training preferred
  • Must have a valid State Driver’s License and valid CDL license-Class A.
  • Must adhere to required safety regulations at all times
  • Must be able to pass a customer required criminal background check and supply an MVR

Heavy Truck Shop Mechanic

V Van Dyke, specialists in heavy haul and oversize trucking, has an exciting opening for a talented and skilled Heavy Truck Shop Mechanic. 

This position is responsible for performing inspections, maintenance, repairing and overhauling heavy-duty vehicles and trucks, trailers, fork lifts, and other automotive vehicles by performing the following duties. Ensures services provided are in compliance with safety procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, electrical trouble shooting, steering and cooling systems.
  • Performs a variety of tasks to include lube and oil changes; brake and suspension system maintenance and repair; engine component replacement for starters, alternators, water pumps, etc.; changing of belts and hoses; repair of minor wiring/lighting problems; rotation or switching or wheels and tires; repair trailer decks; assist with gearbox/clutch replacement; fuel and pressure wash trucks; and general repair of vehicles.
  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
  • Inspects used parts to determine wear and/ or usability.
  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts. Installs special functional and structural parts in devices.
  • Starts devices to test their performance.
  • Reads job order and observes and listens to truck in operation to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures.
  • Installs new ignition systems, diagnoses and repair charging systems, changes or recharges batteries, and other parts.
  • Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks, and makes adjustments.
  • Lubricates and cleans moving parts and drives repaired truck to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Assists with light building and grounds maintenance; and assists with the cleaning and organization of the shop.
  • Removes unit such as engine, transmission, or differential.
  • Overhauls (if required) or replaces carburetors, turbos, alternators, distributors, starters, pumps and etc.
  • Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel.
  • Relines and adjusts brakes, replaces shock absorbers and mounts, and suspension springs and bushings.
  • Repairs or replaces damaged body, bumper, tool boxes, fenders and safety equipment, welding and fabricating broken or damaged parts.
  • Maintain appearance and cleanliness of trucks and trailers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • One to three years related mechanic experience and/or training preferred
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License and valid CDL license-Class A (preferable, not required).
  • Must adhere to required safety regulations at all times
  • Must have and maintain proficiency in use of hand tools needed for repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as repair manuals for equipment, rules, instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Must have basic computer skills and be able to enter shop information into a data base.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong customer service skill to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to anticipate and identify problems, experiment with solutions and make recommendations for resolution.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills with managers, supervisors, individual employees, dispatchers, and customers.
  • Ability to work independently; be self-motivated; results oriented.
